Why Rites of Passage?

Many African-American families face more serious social problems today than ever before.  African-American mothers, sometimes adolescents themselves, are often left alone to raise and provide for their children.  These children are growing up without the presence of positive African-American male role models and without the benefits of the extended family and community network that was traditional to African-American families in the past.  Continuing racism, poverty, and unemployment have exacerbated problems such as violence, suicide, substance abuse, and teenage pregnancy.  Although these problems exist among other ethnic groups, they disproportionately affect the African-American community.  Nationwide, homicide is the leading killer of African-American men age 15-19, more than motor vehicle accidents, AIDS, or cancer.  At the root of statistics like these is a set of fundamental problems.  First, many of the young men involved in delinquent behavior have poor self-esteem; violence towards their peers is often the result of perceived acts of disrespect.  Second, young men who get into trouble are far more likely to have a negative or apathetic attitude towards their ethnic identity.  Finally, there is a correlation between poor school performance and problem behavior.  Obviously, these are not the only factors contributing to delinquent behavior, but approaching this problem inevitable involves addressing self-esteem, ethnic identity, and school performance.  This is where Rites of Passage begins.
